Assembly of Supermarine Spitfire

Assembly of Supermarine Spitfire MK19

One of the most enjoyable experiences that I have been through back in 2016. Bahrain Polytechnic, in collaboration with BAE Systems, RAF Museum, and the Ministry of Education, organized STEM events that aimed towards teaching the younger school students about the theory of flight, in a series of productive workshops that were held in campus, and in the National Museum of Bahrain. I was participating in that event as an organizer, and as a tutor assistant.

As part of the event, RAF Museum were kind enough to showcase one of the Supermarine Spitfire MK19 plane, which was originally funded by Bahrain during WWII. I am adding this to my portfolio, because I was lucky enough to be working side by side with the RAF Engineers to assemble that beautiful piece of engineering multiple times and in different locations (Bahrain Polytechnic, British Embassy, and the National Museum), and disassemble it again for transportation. It was truly an enjoyable, and fruitful experience.

It was not just a matter of screwing the plane’s bits and pieces in place in my opinion. By looking closely to the structure of the plane, and analyzing it from an engineer’s point of view, I had to admire how the engineers at that time, with limited technologies, the nonexistence of CAD/CAM, and limited manufacturing facilities, managed to bring such beautiful piece of art to life. Thank you RAF Museum for this outstanding opportunity.
